18 year old Jon Cardwell placed fourth in Austria at the Youth World Championships in 2006 right behind European prodigy David Lama. In November he grabbed the second ascent of Saddhu (V14) at The Temple in his home state of New Mexico. His tick-list also includes Left Ling Chi (V13/14) at The Temple and Dark Waters (V12/13) at Clear Creek Canyon. Last summer, he climbed 7 routes 8B+ and harder, two 8a+ onsights, one 8B and seven 8A+ boulder problems. He has a tick list that ranks him among the best in North America, while being also the 2007 US National Champion in difficulty, and he just so happens to climb with those who one might think are his rivals, but are in fact his best friends.
What is it about climbing that is addictive to you?
There will never be a time when you perfect your climbing. There is always something you can work on to get stronger or gain mores skills and experience.
Any other sports you're involved with?
I rode BMX bikes for 3 or 4 years. I was psyched on it and still am but climbing has taken over.
How often do you climb or train?
I usually train 6 days a week, resting on Fridays. Monday-Thursday is bouldering and resistance training, then on the weekends I climb outside. I also run 4 times a week.

Seems like you've got a pretty good crew of friends.
We've been chillin and climbing together for so long. I remember Daniel (Woods) climbing his first V10 ages ago when we were 12 or 13. He and I saw Paul (Robinson) break into the V13s this summer. Daniel and Paul saw me climb my first V12s in Hueco. These guys have pushed me so much and I hope that I have done the same for them. We've all witnessed each other break personal barriers, and now with Daniel and his boulder Ode to the Modern Man... it's probably pushing the next level in bouldering. That motivates the rest of us to reach that level also.
What is it like to climb with such a strong group of climbers that happen to also be your best friends?
But for the most part, we're all just good friends. There is never any competition between us. Each of us wants the rest to send and succeed.
